Lions Club of Ichalkaranji itself is a service tree with its branches spread across different services for welfare of society. Lions Association of Ichalkaranji has also gained avery respectable position in the society through is various service projects like blood box, diabetes treatment center, AIDS diagnosis center, eye care center, etc.
Till 1975, the Lions Club of Ichalkaranji was doing small scale service work. They had a big dream to which Dr Bhupal Patel helped and his hospital embarked on an ambitious project through a blood collection center. Lions club members got inspiration from this and they got real donor in the form of Datye family. They gave 33000 sq. ft. of empty space for this project and in 1987 Lt. Balasaheb Date Lions Blood Bank started. This service rich building was inaugurated by auspicious hands of well known marathi writer P L Deshpande. A small blood collection center in Dr Lande hospital became grand. This project received great support of Ln. Chintamani Date and his family, Ln. Vasantraoji Datar, Ln. Dr. Vilas Shah, Ln. Vijay Rathi. The tremendous support of all the Lions and most importantly meaningful contribution of many well-to-do citizens was instrumentla in the creation of all these services.
Through this project, more than one lakh bottles of blood have been donated so far to revive the needy patients. Alternatively, the Lions have blood relation with these people. Of course, this service center could take a better shape only because of voluntary blood donation of many individuals, cooperation of Ichalkaranji and cooperation of various organisations. Due to this, today we are able to distribute blood to more than 4000 patients every year and make significant contribution to health of people of Ichalkaranji and around.
